As we prepare for the 2025 Presidential Election and the transition to Voter.ie in 2026, Galway County Council is intensifying efforts to clean and update the electoral register. Electors must now provide their PPSN, Eircode, and date of birth when registering at www.checktheregister.ie, helping to prevent duplicate entries and improve accuracy.

Galway County Council Affordable Housing - Expression of Interest Survey
|
Galway County Council is inviting the public to participate in an online survey to assist in establishing the profile of demand and preferred locations in County Galway for affordable homes. Over time, this information will enable us to apply to the Department of Housing for future funding for Affordable Housing in various towns across the County, based on identified areas of demand. An Affordable Housing Scheme provides houses at a reduced price for eligible applicants, including First Time Buyers and Fresh Start Buyers. The survey will inform the ongoing work of developing affordable housing across the County, in accordance with ‘Housing for All Delivery Action Plan 2022-2026’. The survey can be viewed and completed on the Galway County Council website at www.galway.ie/AHSurvey or www.gaillimh.ie/SuirbheTI and can be completed in both English or Gaeilge.

Fostering Ecosystem-Based MSP

The Marine Institute - Foras na Mara (MI) have an ongoing project that aims to assess how to foster Ecosystem-Based Marine Spatial Planning in the Celtic Sea. The Marine Plan Project is particularly interested in examining how Marine Spatial Planning and Marine Protected Area processes are managed in existing governance regimes, what governance challenges are experienced by key stakeholders, and how these might be addressed within new governance arrangements.

Researchers from Trinity College Dublin are conducting a national survey to better understand the lives of children with cerebral palsy - their characteristics, participation in daily life activities, and personal priorities.
Who can participate? Parents or guardians of children with cerebral palsy living in the Republic of Ireland.
Why take part? Your insights will help shape a clearer understanding of life with CP and inform future research and support services. The survey is anonymous and completed online.

National Volunteering Strategy Consultations

The National Volunteering Strategy 2021–2025 is coming to an end this year, and the Department has begun work on the next phase — NVS2 (2025–2030). To ensure the new strategy reflects real experiences and priorities, Galway Volunteer Centre are hosting consultation meetings in Galway with volunteers, organisations, not-for-profit groups, and charities. We particularly welcome those with responsibility for recruiting, supporting, and managing volunteers. The Committee is preparing guidelines on how to address intersecting forms of discrimination against women and girls with disabilities in law, policy and practice. The aim is to further guide States on how to address implementation gaps and to collect a repository of good practices. Inputs will be published in the public webpage and used by the Working Group to create the guidelines.

The Circular Economy Innovation Grant Scheme
|
Closing date: Wednesday 8th October 2025
The CEIGS is designed to support innovative circular economy projects led by social enterprises, voluntary and community organisations, and small businesses with fewer than 50 employees. Since its launch in April 2021, the scheme has awarded €1.8 million to 36 projects, spanning key circular economy themes such as food waste, plastics, single-use packaging, construction, textiles, and general waste. The scheme will be administered in partnership with Community Foundation Ireland, a philanthropic hub that connects donors, grantees, and communities committed to positive social change. ESD to 2030 – Funding Call for Schools

The Department of Education and Youth is now inviting applications from recognised primary and post primary schools for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) funding for school projects during 2025/26 in the area of Education for Sustainable Development. Priority will be given to ESD projects that include an element of Local Level Action and/ or Teacher Professional Learning. Grants of between €1,000 and €2,500 are available to schools. With the support of the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage, this fund has been devised to enhance biodiversity in communities throughout the country by combining the expertise of qualified ecologists with the skills, experience, and enthusiasm of local community groups.

♦ Community groups can apply for a grant to engage an ecologist and develop a Community Biodiversity Action Plan (CBAP) for their local area.
♦ Any organisation who has a CBAP to apply for funding to implement recommendations contained in it.

Kilbegnet Ballinakill Historical Society and Creggs Harvest Festival are seeking entries for this year’s competition, which has a prize fund of €1,000.The theme for this year’s Bard Competition is ‘Liberation’. As well as the adult competition, there is also a Junior Bard competition involving local Transition Year students and this has prompted many teenagers to take up the art of poetry.
