Coastwatch Survey 2026 – A Great Opportunity for Galway Tidy Towns Groups

Closing date: Thursday 15th October 2026

Tidy Towns groups, community organisations, schools and families are encouraged to take part in the annual Coastwatch Survey of our coastline and estuaries. The survey involves walking a selected 500m stretch of shore around low tide just once and recording what you observe, including wildlife, invasive species, marine litter, and features of archaeological, historical and cultural interest. Water testing kits for nitrates in streams and other inflows are also available. Financing the Green Transition: Assessing the Role and Scalability of
All Irish Social Enterprises for Climate Action

This is the first comprehensive research examining how all Irish social enterprises finance environmental and climate activities. Whether you're scaling green initiatives or prioritising other social missions, your perspective matters. Irish social enterprises often face barriers accessing green finance that traditional businesses do not, despite delivering strong environmental and social outcomes.
Many social enterprises report that lenders and investors struggle to understand their model and impact. For the first time, we're gathering evidence on what stops social enterprises from accessing green finance, which barriers are fixable vs structural, and which policies would help you.
This evidence aims to inform future government funding mechanisms over the next 5-10 years.
Your participation will shape future policy discussions. This research is sponsored by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht; the survey takes 15 minutes and is completely confidential: Social Enterprises and Financing the Green Transition

Social Farming Ireland

Social farming focuses on people’s potential rather than limitations.
Social Farming is the practice of providing outcome-based support placements on a family farm, using the natural assets of the people, the place, the activities, and the community to support a person to achieve some of their own chosen goals.
The farm remains at its core, a working farm, where the people availing of support can benefit from participation in the ordinary day-to-day farm activities in a non-clinical environment.
Social Farming also creates the opportunity to reconnect farmers with their local communities through opening of their farms as a community-based support for a range of people with many different needs.
Social Farming supports people in living ordinary lives, interacting with their community and environment, developing their potential. Social Farming is a national programme with farms available in your county. For full details see the directory of local supports on the West Be Well site via this link:

Nora Barnacle House invites Galway to read Joyce together this winter

Starting Thursday 8th October from 7pm to 9pm The Nora Barnacle House Museum, Galway
Nora Barnacle House is launching a new winter reading series this October, inviting a small group of readers to explore James Joyce's work in the intimate setting of Nora Barnacle's childhood home.
The five-part series will run once a month from October 2026 to February 2027, bringing together approximately 12 to 16 participants for informal, focused evenings of reading and discussion. Each session will take place from 7pm to 9pm and will follow Joyce's work chronologically.
The reading programme will begin on 8 October 2026 with selected stories from Dubliners (1914), followed on 12 November by A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). The 10 December session will focus on selected articles and poems from 1907 to 1927. On 14 January 2027, participants will read selected excerpts from Ulysses (1922), followed by selected excerpts from Finnegans Wake (1939) on 11 February.
The series is designed in the spirit of a traditional book club. The deliberately small group will allow participants to read, discuss and discover Joyce's work together, in one of Galway's significant literary spaces. Samhain Evening at Brigit’s Garden

Friday 30th October 2026 at 7.30pm - Brigit’s Garden Pollagh, Rosscahill, Co. Galway, H91 CC90
You are warmly invited to join us at Brigit’s Garden for a special gathering to mark the old Celtic festival of Samhain – a candlelit evening, mainly indoors with time around a fire outdoors if the weather is kind.
Samhain/Halloween is one of the great turning points of the Celtic year, marking the end of the cycle and the shift into the darker months of winter. It is a liminal time when the veil between this world and the otherworld is said to be thin, and a time for deep connection with the land and the ancestors.
We will share stories and songs of Samhain and relax with a meditation; we will reflect on what we need to let go of and what we wish to call in over the winter season; we will honour our ancestors and those that have passed and drum around the fire. After the main session there will be a cuppa and an informal gathering around the fire to share songs, poems and stories (please bring something if you wish!). For more information, please visit: Samhain Evening at Brigit’s Garden - Brigit's Garden
